Finding Connection Through Practice
In 2020, when the studios closed and life suddenly felt uncertain, I found myself wondering how we could continue practicing yoga together. I remember making a simple YouTube video with stretches and movements that people could do at home. It was a small way to stay connected during a time when we were all figuring things out. Then came Zoom.
Before long, students were joining from New Jersey, India, and neighboring towns. What started as a way to keep our practice going became a community of its own, with sometimes 15–20 people coming together on screen. During that time, I even guided a few students through yoga teacher training online.
I hadn’t imagined that teaching this way would become such a meaningful part of my work, but it has stayed with me. I continue to teach private and small-group sessions online, usually for 30–45 minutes. I love that we can make time for practice without the commute or the pressure of fitting another big commitment into an already full day.
Zoom Client Testimonial
“Shivani’s strength as a teacher lies in her ability to read her students body. She has a sharp focus when it comes to postures and her verbal instructions are a special skill making it very convenient on zoom to practice with her. She also has excellent nutrition knowledge that helped me immensely. You can blindly trust her with your body and she will make sure you are not injured or in pain. It is the lack of aches and pains that make me want to return to her. Thank you Shivani!” –

Why Practice Online
Making Time for Yourself
One of the things I appreciate about online practice is its simplicity. You can roll out your mat at home, take a little time for yourself, and return to the rest of your day feeling more connected to your body.
Learning to Listen
Teaching online has made me especially attentive to the way I use words. I rely on clear, detailed verbal cues to guide students through movement, alignment, and breath. Rather than always looking at the screen to see what I should do next, students begin to listen more closely and notice what is happening in their own bodies. I find this a valuable part of learning yoga.
Short and Impactful
A focused 30–45 minutes can offer time to work with strength, mobility, alignment, and breath. Shorter sessions also make it easier to return to the mat regularly, even during busy weeks.
